It’s the age of reality shows. From game shows to contests, quizzes and survival shows, they are all in the news.
Whether it is Akshay Kumar in “MasterChef”, Amitabh Bachchan in “KBC”, or Pamela Anderson appearing on “Bigg Boss”, these shows are hogging all the headlines. Some of them are so real that the Parliament (the ultimate reality game show in India) has suggested moving them to late night slots.
Not to be out done, a number of other channels are coming up with reality shows. Here is a sample of a few of them:
“Big Toss” aka “Sardarji Ka Mahal” – In this reality show participants have to get ready to move out of a seven-storeyed building as it collapses. The building has been carefully constructed over the years using sticking plaster, glue and 17 other kinds of substandard materials. The top floor is a marvel in itself, because having run out of money, paying bribes to inspectors, the builder has built it entirely out of empty shoe boxes. So watch the action as participants race against the clock, and falling roof, to try and come out in one piece.
“Aaja Mein Hoon Raja” – This is a game show with a wicked twist where the rules keep changing every 15 minutes. On one side, there are 11 telecom companies bidding for licenses and on the other side there is a power hungry mad game master Mr Raja. Watch with amazement as what begins as an ordinary contest turns into a crazy circus as Mr Raja changes the rules of the game as he pleases. Look carefully at the audience to spot a south Indian Mr Swamy and a sardarji Mr Manmohan because they become more and more important as the game progresses.
“Amazing Adarsh Race” – This show features a whole division of Kargil soldiers as participants. They have survived the cold of the glacier, the battle with the enemy and all the dangers of war. Now they are pitted against politicians and bureaucrats, and they soon discover that the Pakistanis were child’s play compared to their latest opposition!
“Khel Khiladi Kalmadi” – A shopping game show with a difference. Contestants are given unlimited amounts of money to make as ridiculous purchases as possible. The more they can pay for normal items the better. A treadmill for `9.75 lakh, soap dispensers for `10,000, toilet paper for `7,000. The winning team gets to stand on a podium (purchased for `2.5 lakh) and gets an angvastra (purchased for `99,000)!
“Yeddyurappa Appa & Baba Grabba”– A fascinating show where father and son teams travel across the nation trying to grab as much land as possible. Unmissable.
Happy viewing!
